BINDING OF RADIOGRAPHIC CONTRAST MEDIA TO SERUM PROTEINS A clinical and experimental investigation of their adverse effects through influence on active steroid hormone levels. by Staffan Wirell, M.D., Department of Diagnostic Radiology, University Hospital of Umeå, S-901 85 Umeå, Sweden. Summary of thesis based on the following papers: I Wirell S.: Adverse reactions at intravenous cholegraphy with ioglycamide. Correlation with the level of circulating sex hormones. Accepted for publication in Acta Radiol. Diagn. (1982) II Wirell S.: Effects of steroid hormones on the binding of ioglycamide (Bilivistan) to human blood serum. Acta Radiol. Diagn. 19 (1978), 289. III Wirell S.: Release of protein bound progesterone by ioglycamide in human serum. Accepted for publication in Acta Radiol. Diagn. (1982). IV Wirell S., Södergård R. and Selstam G.: Ioglycamide induced release of testosterone and estradiol from protein bound stores. Accepted for publication in Acta Radiol. Diagn. (1982). V Wirell S.: Binding of metrizamide to human serum proteins. Accepted for publication in Acta Radiol. Diagn. (1982). In a clinical study, Paper I, the highest incidence of adverse reactions at intra venous cholegraphy was recorded in young adults; especially in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In Papers II, III and IV, the interplay between the protein binding of a bileexcreted contrast compound, ioglycamide, and steroid sex hormones was studied. Altered binding characteristics of the steroid hormone-protein binding indic ated the possibility of a release of steroid hormones in the presence of ioglyc amide. The significance of this finding was discussed in terms of clinical relevance. In Paper V, the binding of a non-ionic contrast compound to human serum proteins was studied with two different techniques. No, or only little, binding of metriz amide to human serum proteins was demonstrated.

BINDING OF NAPROXEN TO SERUM PROTEINS IN PATIENTS WITH LIVER CIRRHOSIS AND HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS

A three-fold decrease of the in vitro ability of serum proteins to bind naproxen was shown in patients with cirrhosis of the liver compared to healthy individuals. This decrease was caused by quantitative changes in serum proteins in the sera of patients with liver damage. Lower doses of naproxen are therefore suggested in the treatment of patients with liver dysfunction.

Fasting Reduces the Binding between Sugar and Protein; New Insights into Diabetic Complications

Fasting has numerous biological, physical and mental health advantages or that as some physicians cure their patients by prescribing fasting to them. Fasting protects people from many diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes complications. The main health-promoting effects of fasting are increased production of neurotrophic factors, neuroendocrine activation, hormetic stre...

Human placental coated vesicles contain receptor-bound transferrin.

Human placental coated vesicles have been purified by a method involving sucrose-density-gradient centrifugation and treatment with wheat-germ agglutinin. These preparations were free of contamination by placental microvillus fragments. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis demonstrated that the coated vesicles contained a single serum protein, which was identified as transferrin. This transferrin was ...

Immunogenicity of heparin-binding hemagglutinin expressed by Pichia pastoris GS115 strain

Objective(s): Heparin-binding hemagglutinin (HBHA), a mycobacterial cell surface protein, mediates adhesion to nonphagocytic cells and the dissemination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) from the site of primary infection. Superior expression systems are required to obtain abundant M. tuberculosis proteins for the purpose of diagnosing M. tuberculosis infection or for the immuniza...

Identification of the serum binding proteins for iron, zinc, cadmium, nickel, and calcium.

The binding of five biologically important metals to serum proteins has been studied. After suitable radioactive isotopes were added to serum proteins separated and precipitated by two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis, the sample plates were exposed to roentgenogram film. 59Fe bound to transferrin alone; 65Zn bound mostly to albumin, but also to another 12 proteins; 109Cd was mostly associated...
